About Us
The MetroHealth System has been serving the medical needs of the Cleveland community for more than 170 years. Today, MetroHealth is one of the largest, most comprehensive health care providers in Northeast Ohio. This capacity for patient care is supported by a commitment to medical education, research, and community health. The system’s diverse professional staff includes over 500 physicians, 1,100 nurses, and 6,000 employees.
At the heart of the system is MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland’s first hospital and the largest on the city’s west side. The 731-bed medical center provides a full range of general and tertiary services for the acutely ill. Medical rehabilitation services are provided through the renowned MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio.
MetroHealth is nationally recognized for its advanced techniques in treating complex medical problems. Specialty services include: emergency, trauma and critical care; women’s and children’s services, including high-risk obstetrical care and neonatal intensive care; comprehensive medical and surgical subspecialties; heart and vascular care; cancer care; senior health; and stroke and rehabilitative health care services. In addition, MetroHealth Medical Center includes a level one adult and pediatric trauma center, a regional burn center, and Metro Life Flight, one of the busiest emergency air medical transport systems in the country.
Beyond the medical center, MetroHealth operates inpatient and outpatient facilities throughout Greater Cleveland, including a comprehensive outpatient surgery center, two long-term care/skilled nursing centers, and community health sites offering primary and specialty care.
As a principal teaching center of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, MetroHealth maintains a fine tradition of academics and research. All active staff physicians are full-time faculty of the Case School of Medicine and actively participate in undergraduate and graduate medical education.
In 2005, MetroHealth joined the elite ranks of hospitals that have achieved Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The second public hospital in the country to achieve this designation, we are honored to be recognized for the quality of our patient care and the professionalism of our nursing staff.
MetroHealth Medical Center provides care to more than 29,000 inpatients, including more than 3,400 newborns, annually. More than 700,000 visits are recorded each year in the medical center’s outpatient centers. In addition, patient visits to the emergency department exceed 91,000.
